The movie
Pink Floyd at Pompeii Document what the British band did before becoming giants of the album lists, where their music is still celebrated today.
Set in the ruins of the former Roman amphitheater in Pompeya, Italy, This unique and immersive film captures Pink Floyd playing an intimate concert without a public.
Filmed in October 1971, the performance marked the first live concert that took place in Pompeya, and has successes such as Echoes, to Saucerful of Secrets and One of these days.
The impressive images of the amphitheater, captured both day and night, amplify the magic of the performance. In addition, the film includes images not seen behind the band’s scene when starting working in The Dark Side of the Moon In Abbey Road Studios.
The new version
According to Sony Music, Pink Floyd at pompeii – mcmlxxii It has been meticulously restored by hand, frame by frame, from the original 35 mm negative, discovered in five cans doubtfully labeled within the Pink Floyd files themselves. This transcendental advance unearthed the same film that went through the cameras during those suffocating days among the ruins of Pompeii more than 50 years ago.
Directed by Lana Topham, Restoration Director of Pink Floyd, the team’s mission was to preserve the integrity and beauty of the original image. The film scanned in 4K using advanced techniques to guarantee the finest and most clear details. In addition, colors were improved and each frame was checked and meticulously repaired, maintaining a natural and vivid appearance with minimum grain settings.
“Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive Tomas from the movie Pink Floyd at Pompeii, So the recent discovery of the negative cut in 35 mm of 1972 was a very special moment. The recently restored version presents the first complete cut of 90 minuteswhich combines the original 60 -minute edition of the performance with the additional segments of the Abbey Road Studios Filmed documentary shortly after, ”said Lana Topham, Restoration Director of Pink Floyd.
The film also has an impressive sound quality, with a new mixture for cinema and entertainment at the house of Steven Wilson in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos that improves the depth and clarity of the film, preserving the authenticity and spirit of the original 1972 premiere. Wilson’s goal was to remain faithful to how the band would have sounded in those open heat days of 1971.
“Since my father washed my brain when I was a child putting The Dark Side of the Moon Again and again, Pink Floyd has been my favorite band. They are my ‘Beatles’, deeply rooted in my musical DNA. I saw Pompeii for the first time in a granulated copy in a local cinema. It caused me incredible impression with its unbridled and exploratory rock music made by four musicians who seemed to personify the notion of intellectual freshness. It was an honor to recall the soundtrack to accompany the incredible restoration of the film by Lana Topham, which seems to have been filmed yesterday, ”added Wilson.
