Second Hearing Against Jorge Gaitán Paredes to Take Place Today

Legal Proceedings Against the Guatemalan Businessman

The Third Criminal Sentencing Court is holding the second hearing today against Guatemalan businessman Jorge Leonel Gaitán Paredes. He is wanted by Salvadoran authorities for aggravated theft, according to an arrest warrant issued by El Salvador’s Attorney General’s Office.

Arrest and Charges

Jorge Gaitán Paredes was detained today and presented before the court, where he was informed of the charges against him. According to the Public Ministry (MP) representative, El Salvador seeks his extradition for allegedly using the company Tierra Towers S.A.—a firm dedicated to telecommunications infrastructure construction and maintenance—to unlawfully extract funds.

Alleged Financial Misconduct

The prosecution claims that Gaitán Paredes, along with his son, Jorge Alberto Gaitán Castro—who is also subject to an arrest warrant from the Salvadoran prosecutor’s office—embezzled over $1 million. This was allegedly done through unauthorized travel expenses, bank transactions, and check issuances without company approval.

Extradition and Preventive Detention

During the hearing, the MP representative stated that Salvadoran authorities are expected to formalize their extradition request through diplomatic channels. As a precautionary measure, they requested that Jorge Gaitán Paredes remain in preventive detention until the extradition process concludes.
