What does orange alert mean?

The alert declaration is a prevention measure used by the authorities to warn the population about the imminent risk of a natural, socio-natural or anthropic phenomenon.

In the case of the Volcano de Fuego, the Orange alert indicates significant dangerwhich requires immediate attention and preparation for possible evacuations.

There are four alert levels in Guatemala:

  • Green alert (surveillance): Normal activities are maintained, but under constant monitoring.
  • Yellow alert (prevention): The population is recommended to be attentive to the instructions of the authorities.
  • Orange alert (danger): Security protocols are activated and evacuation is prepared in risk areas.
  • Red alert (emergency): Mandatory evacuations are executed and the state of emergency is declared in the affected region.

Conred reported that volcanic activity includes the Pyroclastic flow decrease that could move through any ravine, which represents a risk and motivated activation of the Orange alert.

As part of this declaration, according to response plans, local authorities and members of various institutions activated the Municipal Emergency Operations Center in San Juan Altanango.

The objective of this space is to coordinate the response actions at the local level, monitoring the conditions from a closer perimeter.

The first measures issued by the Conred system in the context of the alert are:

  • Promote self -evacuation among residents near the volcano.
  • Mobilize humanitarian aid for evacuated families from the Central Winery of the Conred.
  • Suspend classes on Monday, March 10, according to the recommendations of the Conred Executive Secretariat.

The suspension applies to students and educational personnel of Alotenango, Sacatepéquez; Escuintla and Siquinalá, in the department of Escuintla; and in San Pedro Yepocapa, Chimaltenango.

Recommended actions before the orange alert

The authorities urge the population to follow these recommendations:

  • Stay informed through official sources such as Conred and Insivumeh.
  • Prepare one 72 -hour backpack With water, non -perishable food, important documents and a first aid kit.
  • Identify evacuation routes and temporary shelters designated by the authorities.
  • Follow the instructions of the relief bodies and local authorities.

The CONRED continues to monitor the activity of the Fire Volcano and reported that it could update the alert level according to the evolution of the phenomenon.
