Given the poor air quality, product of the incident in the AMSA landfill, the Ministry of Education reported this Sunday, March 16 that the classes were suspended in Escuintla and in four municipalities in the department of Guatemala.
In Guatemala, the suspension applies in the capital, San Miguel Petapa, Amatitlán, Villa Canales and Villa Nueva. The measure will be in force on Monday, March 17, 2025, according to an official statement.
“The Ministry of Education informs the educational community that, derived from the fire that is recorded in the PSSA landfill and attending the recommendations of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) in terms of air pollution, educational activities are suspended in the department of Escuintla and in the municipalities of Guatemala, San Miguel Petapa, Amatitlán, Villa Canales and Villa Nueva,”
The prevention measure applies to public and private sector educational centers, by cooperative, municipal and extracurricular education.
“According to the Bulletin of the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), air quality is in a very bad category, considering it harmful to human health. As a measure of prevention and protection of the health of children, adolescents and young people, as well as teachers, educational activities are suspended for Monday, March 17, 2025, ”the document reiterates.
The authorities emphasize that the measure could be extended, according to the recommendations issued by Conred and Insivumeh.
