The captain of the National Team of Guatemala, José Pinto, spoke after the unexpected 3-2 defeat against Guyana in the first leg of the preliminary phase of the Gold Cup 2025, ensuring that the series is still open and that at home the blue and white must go out with everything to achieve the classification.
“It was not the result we wanted or what we were coming. We worked to win, but unfortunately it did not happen. However, the series is alive, we made two goals of visitors and that also counts. At home we have to go out with everything and for ours, which is the pass to the Gold Cup”
Pinto, who scored Guatemala’s second goal in the game, acknowledged that the team had ups and downs in its performance, especially in the first part, which allowed Guyana to take advantage in the scoreboard. “The second half were much better than the first, but unfortunately we sinned in some mistakes that they took advantage of”he commented.
Message to the fans
One of the key points that Pinto mentioned was the hobby factor in the second leg, highlighting the importance of a full stadium that drives the national team.
“We hope that on Tuesday the stadium is full, to support us, that will surely weigh the opponent, like every team that has arrived in Guatemala. That they support us at all times, because we will go looking for that pass to the Gold Cup“
The captain also made it clear that for the second leg, the team will come out with a different intensity, seeking to impose its rhythm from the beginning.
“From us you can expect that intensity, we are going to look for the rival arch and create goal options as we did today. We know that we have to be more effective and correct the mistakes we made“
The central defender also stressed that the group is committed to reverse the situation and that they trust to make a different game at home. “We have the ability to turn it around, we know that the fans are upset, but we are convinced that we can make a great game on Tuesday and get the classification”he said.
With the message of José Pinto and the team’s commitment, now the pressure lies that the blue and white can demonstrate its capacity and correct the errors of the first game. The Guatemalan fans expect a blunt response at home, in a duel that will define the future of Guatemala in the most important tournament in the region.
