Among the various expressions of faith that are manifested in Guatemala during the Easter weekstands out one that has marked the hearts of thousands of faithful throughout their 30 years of history: The painful road.
This work is more than a simple representation of the Passion of Christ; It is a project that has evolved over time, adapting to the needs and expectations of the public.
According to Erick López, director of the work, this staging arises year after the collaboration of creative minds.
Among the four talented are Carlos López, screenwriter; Juan Magaña, dance manager; Luis Chacón, responsible for production; and Marvin García, in charge of musicalization, who seek to bring people closer to faith and offer them an experience that allows them to connect with the history of Jesus from a human and emotional perspective.
A collective effort
The preparation of the painful path is a process that involves more than 300 volunteers, who dedicate months of work in various commissions. Since December, the team begins to plan every detail, from the scenery and costumes to musicalization and makeup.
In the work, although there are three fixed songs that are maintained every year, the rest of the music adapts to the narrative of the story. For its part, the choir, the dancers and the actors – all members of the Church – contribute their talent and dedication to create an unforgettable experience.
In addition, the painful path has become a cultural and religious reference in Guatemala, thanks to its ability to combine the biblical message with high quality production.
Since its inception, it has only paused for two years because of the pandemic; However, since it was resumed in 2022, the organizers have been in charge of showing the Guatemalans one of the most iconic religious expressions in the country during Holy Week.
An experience for the whole family
Every year, the work is renewed with a different approach. By 2025, the story will focus on the perspective of Judas, one of the most controversial and enigmatic characters in the Bible.
This approach will allow viewers to reflect on issues such as betrayal, repentance and redemption, all accompanied by a renewed musical and dance proposal.
The painful road 2025 will take place on April 11 and 12 at 7:00 p.m., and on Sunday, April 13 at 10 and 7:00 p.m. At the headquarters of the Christian Fraternity of Guatemala, located in the 1st 18-81 street, sector B-1, Zone 8 of Mixco, San Cristóbal City. The entrance is free and the event is open to all audiences, with parking availability.
