One of the sensations that are most enjoyed is when, after a long and tired day, we put ourselves in bed and curl up in The pillow. This action becomes more pleasant when the sheets are clean and the bed has a fresh and clean aroma.

“Our bed is not the cleanest place in the home. Many times it keeps the combination of sweat, dandruffdead face cells, dust, small food and hair remains, so we find bacteria and fungi that can affect our health, ”says Claudia Velásquez, interior designer.

The expert invites you to make the following reflection: If we get used to shaking the dust inside the house every short time, why don’t we do it in our bed? Although it seems trivial, it is very important for the care of our health.

With the simple action of changing the sheets of the bed every week we avoid the microbes that can be housed in the mattress and the pillows, such as dust mites and other bacteria, which usually cause allergies and skin problems.

“When we sleep the skin is regenerated. So you release dead skin remains that stay in the sheets. In addition, sweat and other fluids are released. All concentrate on bedding and, if we usually sleep without clothes, bacteria and fungi directly affect us on the skin,” adds the dermatologist Carlos Castillo.

How often should the bedding be changed?

Experts agree that this question depends on the context of each person, although the ideal time is every week. “We can have a routine and every Sunday to change the shells and the covers of the pillows, to start the week with a feeling of clean and freshness,” says Velásquez.

This time can change and depend on the activities of each one. For example, in summer, when we are very hot and we sweat more, the ideal is that clean clothes do not wait more than a week. However, in winter, I could wait for up to two weeks.

In case there are pets and/or children, the ideal time is also a week, to prevent them from getting sick.

In addition to the change of sheets, there are some actions that also help keep the bed clean and free of germs:

  • Make the bed every day and stretch the sheets: This will help mites and bacteria move and leave.
  • Raise the comforter before bedtime, as any sign of moisture will be avoided.
  • Place a cover directly to the mattress and wash it every or two weeks.
  • Aspiring the mattress and the base of the bed every month will help lift the dust.
  • Change the covers of the pillows every two or three days.

The bedding is recommended to wash it in high average temperatures, approximately between 40 ° C and 60 ° C, to end the germs. In addition, use enough soap and let them dry completely, before using again.
