Hundreds of people protested this Saturday in front of the facilities of an Immigrant Detention Center in Miami, after multiple complaints were known about inhuman conditions and alleged abuses to women in custody in this jail destined only to men.
The protesters gathered in front of the Krome North Detention Center to demand accountability to the immigration and customs control service (ICE) about the situation of immigrants detained in this prison, which, which He has registered the death of two foreigners in their custody so far from 2025.
The anger of activists and the general public increased after a report of the USA Today newspaper was known this week, which cited the complaints under anonymity of four women who detailed the alleged deplorable conditions. One of them described the center as “a hell.”
Immigrants assured that they live in unhealthy conditions and overcrowding, lack of access to bathroom and shower.
In addition, in the absence of space, ICE would have kept the detainees chained by feet and hands for eight hoursin the buses that were transferred to the center.
The prison guards would also have made women run to their cell while the detainees watched them.
In statements cited by CBS, ICE clarified that although the Krome center hosts men exclusively, it is not uncommon for women to be held there while they are prosecuted, they expect their transfer to a prison for women or their deportation flight.
“Women arrested are not held in the general population, so the men arrested do not have access to them,” added the Television Migration Agency.
The Krome Center stood in the activists this year after the death of the Honduran Genry Donaldo Ruiz-Guillén, 29, on January 23; and of the Ukrainian Maksym Chernak, 44, who died on February 20.
Both migrants were transferred to hospitals after being arrested in this jail.
The protesters demanded an investigation and the closing of this center of detention
The administration of President Donald Trump has increased the number of immigrants in ICE custody and has asked Congress more funds to increase the number of prisons for immigrants.
