The United States Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Besent, advised on Wednesday, April 2 to the rest of the countries that do not climb the commercial war with reprisals to the tariffs announced by the US President, Donald Trump.
“Let’s see how this evolves, because if they are taken, this is how the war intensifies,” Besent said in an interview with the CNN chain.
The Treasury Chief said that countries affected by tariffs have a commercial surplus with the United States and that, if they take measures in retaliation, they will be harmed.
“Relax, breathe deep, do not retaliate immediately,” he said.
Trump announced on Wednesday the imposition of a 10 % global base tariff for all countries that, in their opinion, establish commercial barriers to US products, although it added an additional tariff for those nations that consider the worst offenders.
Thus, 34 % tariffs will impose imports from China, from 20 % to the European Union, from 24 % to Japan, from 26 % to India, from 17 % to Israel and 10 % to most Latin American nations.
The minimum 10 % tariff will enter into force on Saturday, April 5, while the additional part that affects each nation will begin to be applied on day 9.
