Vice President Karin Herrera said she submitted a new request to reduce her representation expenses and said she has not disobeyed the instruction of President Bernardo Arévalo.

Herrera reported on Monday, April 7 that he sent this request, after last week it was announced that he receives a salary higher than the president, although he announced a 25% reduction in the salaries of both.

The official insisted that the situation does not constitute a disobedience towards the president.

Regarding his previous statements, in which he pointed out that he should not give explanations to the population about his salary, Herrera said: “I apologize because at the time I did not give the corresponding monitoring.”

On April 4, during an interview with the Network, the vice president referred to the issue of her salary and the instruction issued by the President in relation to the reduction of expenses.

The interview was given after the free press post entitled: Vice President Karin Herrera did not reduce the salary, he wins more than President Arévalo and would be the best paid official in Guatemala.

Herrera said that, in 2024, the president told him that he had to apply a reduction to his 25%salary, and subsequently sent him a letter, in addition to an email with the model he had to present. He said he still retains that document.

“I already have the warning of lawyers that this can bring legal consequences in the future, not at this time, right? But with future leaders,” he said.
