The legislative agency reported on Wednesday, April 9 that maintenance, conservation and restoration work on the terrace, roofs, pediment and frontispiece of the Legislative Palace
As explained, the works include the parliamentary hemicycle and the town hall, historical buildings dating from 1934 and that require urgent intervention due to water leaks in the roofs and slab.
Karla Solórzano, in charge of maintenance and restoration of the legislative agency building, indicated that the work will begin during the recess for Holy Week.
The project covers the renewal of the facade of the Congress building, opened in 1934 and that, since then, has not been restored.
He added that the hemicycle and tile roofs will also be changed, due to water leaks and the deterioration of wood. Likewise, the ceilings of the offices of the Board of Directors will be intervened.
As part of the works, a sheet of sheet was placed in front of the building and scaffolding will be installed.
Solórzano recalled that the project proposal began in 2018 and that they have the authorization of the Ministry of Culture, as well as with the permits of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Health, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) and the Municipality of Guatemala.
He stressed that the permits were granted since 2020, although some licenses have had extension.
He pointed out that, due to deterioration, there have been water leaks that have damaged different areas of the structure, including the painting of the board of directors.
He said that one of the biggest damage is located on the roof of the hemicycle and in the town hall.
The first phase contemplates the intervention on ceilings and facades. To continue with other stages, it will be necessary to process new permits.

Regarding the cost of the project, Solórzano said it did not have the exact amount, but estimated that it could amount to Q5 million 769 thousand.
According to the contract, the works could last 305 days; However, they are expected to conclude them within eight months.
