The United States sanctioned Jesús Alfredo Beltrán Guzmán, aka “El Mochomito”, a leader of the Mexican Cartel of the Beltrán Leyva, accused of traffic of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine, the Treasury department reported Wednesday.
The Beltrán Leyva organization is involved in shootings, murders, kidnappings, torture and violent charges of drug debts, Washington complaint.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), under the Department of Treasury, imposed sanctions on “El Mochomito” to block all their assets in the United States or those that are held or under the control of US citizens.
Beltrán Guzmán and his organization act “with violent impunity, trafficked with mortal drugs, threatening the communities and attacking key officials,” denounced the secretary of the Treasury, Scott Besent, cited in a statement.
“El Mochomito” is the eldest son of Alfredo Beltrán Leyva, former leader of the organization, who is serving life imprisonment in an American prison. He is also the nephew of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, former head of the Sinaloa Cartel imprisoned in that country.
The current leader of the Beltrán Leyva is Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, known as “El Chapo Isidro”.
In 2016, Mexican security forces arrested “El Mochomito” for possession of cocaine and weapons.
While he was in prison, Beltrán Guzmán was accused of torturing and extorting other prisoners, as well as continuing with his drug trafficking operations, says Washington.
Before and after his release in 2021, “he has been involved in cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl traffic,” adds the statement.
He is accused of operating mainly in an area known as the Golden Triangle, which covers the Mexican states of Sinaloa (Este), Chihuahua (North) and Durango (center).
In addition to drug trafficking, it is believed that Beltrán Guzmán is responsible for the murder of agent Halexy Guadalupe, which occurred on December 18, 2024.
