The plane is from the tropic airline Air to the Corozal – San Pedro route. Although the kidnapper asked the pilot to fly outside the Belizean territory, he finally landed at the Philip Swgoldson International Airport of the Belize capital, needing the aircraft to refue to continue the journey.
Several sources from the Tropic Air airline consulted by EFE confirmed the “emergency” situation and that were monitoring it, but avoided giving more information.
For his part, the Belize police commissioner, Chester Williams, in an impromptu press conference at the airport, explained that the situation was under control after despite the initial opposition by the kidnapper, knowing that the security forces were waiting for him, the plane managed to land in time, just at the time he “was left without fuel.”
“The kidnapper had a knife and, as we knew for one of the injured passengers, when the plane (the passenger) was landed. He had a weapon license, so it was he who shot the kidnapper and also handed us the gun. Unfortunately, that passenger is in critical condition, ”said the commissioner.
He explained that although he is not confirmed, this passenger – who shot the kidnapper “in the chest” – was stabbed “back and it seems that his lungs were collapsed. He was urgently transferred to the hospital.”
“We are praying for Him. It’s our hero today, I must say,” Williams acknowledged.
He was also transferred to the hospital El kidnapping, where “he was declared dead upon arrival.”
The commissioner explained that they have the knife with which the kidnapper wounded “two passengers and a pilot” of the plane, in which 14 passengers were traveling, among which there were two Americans and the rest were nationals of Belize, including a minor.
The United States Embassy was contacted and is doing its investigations on what happened, he noted.
