In that sense, the Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Guatemala issued a statement to express, “with deep pain”, the death of the Pope, but also with hope in the promise of the risen Jesus.
He added that Pope Francis joins the pain of the universal church for the death of his holiness.
“He was a tireless witness of the Gospel, a close father, a humble server of the poor and a shepherd with a smell of sheep,” said the archdiocese.
“From the beginning of his pontificate, the Holy Father showed the face of a simple, merciful and committed church with the most fragile. An open -door church, where his clear and prophetic word, his tenderness towards the little ones and his firm defense of human dignity deeply touched the heart of the Guatemalan people,” he said.
He stressed that the faithful pray before the departure of a Pope who taught them to dream of a church at exit, which opened dialogue paths. “He challenged us to take care of the common house and urged us not to remain indifferent to the suffering of existential peripheries,” he said.
