With an economic projection of more than Q27.5 million for Cobán, the Half Marathon has been established as a development platform for the region. This activity promotes the local economy and strengthens the export sector by projecting Cobán as a destination with potential for sustainable tourism.

The Cobán Marathon, which will be held on May 25, represents one of the most anticipated sports activities in the country for its historical relevance and for the economic and social impact it generates in the region. This year, the participation of more than 8 thousand runners, from at least 11 departments of the country, as well as high -level international athletes, including Kenyan professional runners.

“From the AGEXport Sustainable Tourism Commission, it is considered that sports tourism is an effective way to diversify the tourist offer, decentralize tourism to regions with high potential such as Verapaz and make visible the cultural and natural attributes of the territory. These types of events allow us to show a strong region, with infrastructure and ability to receive thousands of people, generating real opportunities for entrepreneurs and local communities,” said Diego Fernández, president of the Board of Directors of the Agxport Sustainable Tourism Commission.

According to the economic impact study, it is estimated that Cobán could receive more than Q27.5 million during the realization of the event, thanks to spending on transport, lodging, food, typical purchases and other tourist services. This flow of visitors directly benefits the micro, small and medium enterprises, strengthening the local economy and contributing to the sustainable development of Cobán.

In addition, the Half Marathon encourages the integration of communities, local pride and recognition of Cobán as a destination suitable for great events. It is an intergenerational and family meeting, where people can participate from 14 to 90 years.

The diversity of participants (both men and women, of different ages and regions of the country) demonstrates how sport encourages inclusion. Although greater male participation (71,98%) is projected, the female presence (28.02%) continues to grow, reflecting advances to equality in spaces traditionally dominated by men.

Agexport reaffirms its vision of promoting sustainable tourism through strategic alliances that enhance local development, entrepreneurship and promotion of emerging destinations. With this agreement, Cobán prepares to highlight the route of the half marathon. This is a clear example of how sport and tourism can go hand in hand to a more prosperous future for the country.
