Last weekend he began with an exchange of letters between the United States and Mexico agriculture departments for the concern of the first to cases of a bullial worm in the neighboring country.

The Mexican Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué, replied on April 27, that Mexico does not “subordinate” before the alert of his counterpart from the United States, Brooke Rollins, about stopping the importation of Mexican cattle by the plague of the barren’s worm.

Berdegué said that “the Secretary’s letter” has answered promptly, who on April 26, asked Mexico to allow the “complete deployment” of contractor planes of the Department of Agriculture (USDA, in English) for combat operations to the insect in Mexican territory.

“As our president has said, Claudia Sheinbaum, we act with the cold head, we collaborate, cooperate, but we never subordinate,” said the official in his social networks without revealing the content of his response to Rollins.

The United States had already paused last November and reactivated in February the importation of cattle in Mexico due to the presence of the boreride worm, which has been detected, above all, on the border with Central America and caused death two weeks ago by Miasis in a 77 -year -old woman in the state of Chiapas.

Before the current scenario, the US Secretary of Agriculture sued Mexico on Saturday “to eliminate restrictions on USDA airplanes and exempt customs to the eradication team” of the worms.

“If these problems are not resolved for Wednesday, April 30, the USDA will restrict the importation of animal products, which consist of living, bovine and equine cattle originally or transferred by Mexico to protect the interest of the agricultural industry in the United States,” Rollins warned in his mistress.

“It’s an excess”

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, yesterday called “an excess” the petition of the USDA, to combat the plague of the chesting worm in Mexican territory and its warning of curbing cattle imports.

“There are things that are right, collaboration, coordination, and others that we consider to be excesses, but the important thing is to attend to this situation of the boreride worm in cattle and we are doing it,” said the president at her morning conference.

Sheinbaum considered that “there are applications that do not correspond” after the weekend alert of the Secretary Rollins.

Back

The Mexican National Agricultural Council (CNA) supported President Sheinbaum yesterday, for her response to combat the boreride worm before the warning of the United States to stop the imports of Mexican cattle.

The CNA, which groups agricultural, livestock, fisheries and agro -industrial producers, highlighted in a statement the importance of the “timely” reaction of the Mexican government to contain the plague and reinforce health controls before the USDA alert.

“We recognize the importance of keeping dialogue open and strengthening collaboration with the United States authorities, aware that joint technical work has been essential to safeguard agricultural health of the region,” said the CNA.

In the midst of this context, the CNA emphasized in its note that an eventual closing of exports would have serious consequences for the Mexican rural economy, as well as for the meat supply chain in the United States, which would affect consumer prices and market stability.

“We trust that, through technical and diplomatic coordination, we will continue to advance in the protection of animal health, the well -being of the producers and the continuity of trade,” the agency concluded.

Mexican cattle exports to the United States grew by 37.8% in cycle 2023-2024, reaching 1.3 million heads, according to data from the National Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality Service (Senasica).
