The President of the Republic, Bernardo Arévalo, described this April 30 to the union leader Joviel Acevedo as a “quasi minister of education”, and said that the Guatemala (Steg) education workers union (Steg)of which Acevedo is general secretary, has not supported a collective pact with the authorities of the Ministry of Education.

“These negotiations have not been concluded by Steg’s refusal to discuss articles inherited from the anterior pact, which illegally They give the Secretary General functions that correspond exclusively to the Ministry of Education“Arévalo said at a press conference.

Arévalo said that, due to this insistence of the Steg to maintain articles of the previous pact, “rights and powers have been granted” that they make it a “Quasi Minister in parallel”.

“This is unacceptable in a rule of law. You can’t talk about educational progress while A pact that undermines public institutionality is maintained, “said Arévalo.

The statements of the president are given at a press conference where they announced a 5% salary increase to teachers from June 2025.
