Darío Morales García was linked to criminal proceedings for extrajudicial execution in the degree of complicity and false testimony, for the crime against Monsignor Juan José Gerardi, which occurred in 1998.

This was resolved by Judge Abelina Cruz Toscano at a hearing this Monday, May 5, and indicated that there are sufficient reasonable elements at this stage.

On April 28, security forces reported on the capture of Morales, after he was deported from Alexandría, Louisiana, USA.

The one linked to the process and sent to preventive detention had a current arrest warrant for being indicated in the case of the death of Monsignor Gerardi.

The judge gave two months for the Public Ministry to expand the investigation and scheduled intermediate stage hearing for July 10 at 9 am.

Morales García was required by a court since July 2010.

Crime against Gerardi

Juan José Gerardi was not a popular bishop like others. In fact, many met him until the day of his death, that is, until the day of his immolation.

He spent most of his priestly life in silence, research and pastoral work in the interior of the country. Quiché and the Verapaces forged their temper priestly, their value to the adversity and its human courage.

That clarity of mind and heart went out at 10:00 p.m. on April 26, 1998, when he was hit in the head in the parish house of the Church of San Sebastián, in zone 1. He was the first bishop murdered in the country, supposedly in “times of peace.”

His death occurred just over two days after presenting the report at the Metropolitan Cathedral Historical Memory Recovery (Rehi), in which hundreds of names of civilians killed during the internal armed conflict, including catechists, priests and religious were documented.
