The mayor of the city of Guatemala, Ricardo Quiñónez, reported on the social network X that, after advancing with the “modernization” of roads such as the RooseveltAguilar Batres, Atanasio and Calzada San Juan, will now respond to one of the most urgent citizen demands: integrally intervene Martí Street, a key artery for mobility in the capital.

He added that, from the second half of May, Asphalt change work will begin in this important route.

He explained that the project will be developed in stages, with extended work days, day and night, and a technical planning designed to minimize traffic effects.

“We know that temporary changes will be presented in the circulation, such as distributions or alternate routes, but this intervention is key to improving road safety, expediting displacements and optimizing the operation of the road network,” according to the mayor.

According to the commune, the intervention on Martí Street will begin in the section between the 12th “A” avenue and the 15 avenue in zone 6, in the south of north, a key section where more than 75 thousand vehicles are mobilized every day.

He added that, to advance efficiently and reduce discomfort, work will be carried out continuously and with specialized machinery.

They stressed that Martí and the José Milla and Vidaurre Calzada directly connect seven areas of the city (1, 2, 17, 18, 24 and 25) and facilitate entry and exit to neighboring municipalities such as Palencia and Chinautla.

The commune estimates that this road corridor has a direct impact on more than half a million people, consolidating itself as a structuring route for urban development and mobility of the city.

“We could not expect anymore. This project represents a forceful response to a legitimate citizen demand. It is a reconstructive improvement to facilitate mobility and promote economic attraction. We are acting responsibly, even knowing that the climatic and logistics challenges are important. The city advances, and does it street by street,” said the mayor, according to the commune.

The Municipality reported that on Tuesday, May 6, there was a working meeting together with representatives of the Works Department, Municipal Traffic Police, Emetra, municipal transport company, as well as the auxiliary mayors of zones 1, 2, 6, 17, 18, 24 and 25. The objective was to draw the route for the execution of this initiative.

Among the central themes addressed in this meeting, they highlighted the planning of the work schedule and the definition of alternate roads, essential aspects to minimize the impact on vehicular circulation and ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

Sections with fractured slabs

According to the commune, from January 2024 to May 2025, at least five traffic accidents have been registered on Martí Street, so this situation has evidenced the urgent need to intervene this important artery, which has sections with fractured slabs and potholes, factors that contribute to risk for drivers and pedestrians.

What is the objective of the work

He affirmed that these background reinforce the need for the asphalt maintenance project that will be executed soon with three clear objectives: reduce accidentability, expedite mobility and improve the road safety of all neighbors who travel daily by this strategic corridor of the city.

Asphalt maintenance works on Martí Street will be developed in six phases, in this way, the commune seeks to minimize the impact on vehicular traffic.

The project will officially start on May 17. Although it is designed to run in 14 months, the municipality plans to reduce time considerably through uninterrupted work shifts.

There will also be changes in the Transmetro and Tubus route. I consulted here.
