Brazil will return four pre -Hispanic archaeological pieces to Guatemala that were in a museum in São Paulo, the Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced on Monday, during an encounter with his Guatemalan counterpart, Carlos Ramiro Martínez.

The pieces were in the collection of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of the University of São Paulo (MAE/USP) since 2009, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

The Brazilian ministry offered no more information about archaeological pieces or the circumstances in which they arrived in the country.

In the note, the Brazilian government reaffirmed its position in defense of the return and restitution of cultural goods to their countries of origin, in accordance with the UNESCO Convention of 1970, which deals with the cultural artifacts extracted in an illegal way.

Brazil hopes to act with Guatemala and other partners in the most varied international forums in favor of the claims of historically private countries of their cultural heritage, added the information.
