A video released in social networks shows an incident between an agent of the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) of Guatemala and a motorist on Martí Street, 2 capital zone. The authorities of the Metropolitan Entity Regulatory Transportation and Transit (Emetra) qualify the fact as an aggression and announced that it will be denounced.
Amílcar Montejo, communication director of Emetra, confirmed the incident and described it as an aggression against the transit agent. In addition, he gave details about the motorist’s behavior.
Montejo explained that the agent, who was in front of the Modern neighborhood, notified the driver for circulating with the folded rear plate, which hid the vehicle identification data, a practice prohibited by the current traffic regulations.
He added that, minutes after the notification, the motorist returned to the place and assaulted the officer, so some neighbors intervened and alerted the National Civil Police. However, he pointed out that the agents did not follow the protocol established for these types of cases.
As a consequence of the aggression, injuries are reported to the agent and damage to municipal equipment, including a radiocommunicator. Therefore, the authorities initiated the corresponding legal procedures and filed complaints for aggression to authority and damage to official equipment.
As reported, the motorcycle involved already registered a history of infractions and has a fine pending payment. Montejo pointed out that this history shows that it is not the first time that the driver breaches traffic regulations, which puts road safety at risk.
The authorities reiterate the importance of respecting traffic regulations and keeping vehicles in adequate conditions to circulate, including the correct exhibition of identification plates, whose alteration constitutes a serious offense according to the regulation.
