What is the meaning of the shield of the new Pope Leo XIV
The new Pope’s shield Leo XIV It was presented this Saturday, May 10. According to Vatican News: The shield is diagonally divided into two sectors: at the top it has blue background.
In the upper part they were added to the original Cardinal shield, the keys of San Pedro, one of silver and another of gold, the colors of the Vatican, according to the newspaper ABC.
The silver miter – in the upper part – with the three golden stripes symbolize the three powers of the Pope: teach, sanctify and govern.
The white lily or flower of Lis, is associated with the Virgin Mary, explains ABC, which highlights its Marian vocation.

In the lower part it shows an image reminiscent of the order of San Agustín -Obispo de Hipona -a closed book with a heart crossed by an arrow.
The image remembers the conversion of St. Augustine that he explained with the words: “Vulnesti Cor Meum Verb Tuo” (You have crossed my heart with your word).
The meaning of the motto
The motto chosen by Pope Leo XIV:
These are the words that the Bishop of Hipona pronounced in a sermon to explain that “although Christians are many, in the only Christ we are one.”
In an interview they did to Cardinal Prevost in 2023, Vatican News notes, which said:
“As can be seen from my episcopal motto, unity and communion are part of the charism of the order of San Agustín and also my way of acting and thinking.
I think it is essential to promote communion in the Church, and we know that communion, participation and mission are the three key words of the Synod.
Therefore, as Augustine, for me to promote unity and communion is fundamental. San Agustín speaks a lot about the unity of the Church and the need to live it.
