The US president, Donald Trump, revealed on Sunday, May 11, his plans for a new pharmaceutical policy that, according to him, will reduce the value of prescribed medications in the United States by up to 80%.
The prices “will rise worldwide to compensate for the balance and, for the first time in many years, bring equity to the United States!”, Wrote the republican president in a publication on social networks, adding that he plans to sign a decree at 09h00 (13h00 GMT) on Monday so that the measure enters into force.
Trump said he plans to institute a “most favored nation” policy that sets the price of medicines in the United States to the lowest value paid by any other country in the world.
“I will sign one of the most important executive orders in the history of our country. The prices of prescription and pharmaceutical drugs will be reduced, almost immediately, between 30% and 80%,” he said
This reduction in the costs of prescription medicines in the North American country would be compensated, he added, for the highest prices in other nations.
The White House did not immediately respond to AFP requests to obtain more details about the plan.
“For many years the world has wondered why prescribed medications and pharmaceutical products in the United States had a much higher price than in any other country. Sometimes between five and ten times more expensive than the same medicine, manufactured in the same laboratory or plant, by the same company?” Trump said.
“Contributions to campaigns can do wonders, but not with me, and not with the Republican party,” Trump added. “We are going to do the right thing.”
