After the announcement made by Deputy Samuel Pérez on the formation of a new political party – which will also integrate other deputies of the Semilla Movement – the fragmentation within the official bloc is confirmed.
A few days ago, Pérez said that not all the current seed deputies would be part of this new project, which shows the internal division that has been notorious for several weeks.
It is known for now that, in addition to the group led by Pérez, there is another faction headed by the Ministers of Development and Finance, Abelardo Pinto and Jonathan Menkos, who are close to President Bernardo Arévalo. This group also belongs to deputies José Carlos Sanabria, Victoria Godoy Palala, Duvalier Castañón and Olga Villalta, who, in the last sessions of the Congress, have remained distant from the team led by Pérez.
Divisions in other legislative blocks
Fragmentation is not limited to ruling. At least five banks have evidenced internal struggles since the beginning of the tenth legislature.
Come on
The Vamos bench, headed by Allan Rodríguez, is currently the greatest opposition force of Congress, with 39 deputies. However, it is fractionated in at least four groups. Although Rodríguez has insisted that the block remains united, the most visible division occurred at the end of April, when the legislative president, Shirley Rivera, participated in the National Assembly of his new party, New times. Although it still appears as a deputy of Vamos, no longer participates in voting or key meetings of the block.
National Unity of Hope (UNE)
UNE is divided into two groups. On the one hand, the one led by Inés Castillo, related to Sandra Torres, with whom he has managed to file roughness despite the fact that at the time he requested his expulsion. On the other hand, the group headed by Adim Maldonado has repeatedly stated its disagreement with the guidelines imposed by Torres since the beginning of the legislature in 2024.
Thorough
Although it has 18 deputies, Cabal also presents fractures. Eleven of its members support the head of Banking Luis Aguirre, who has supported the Board of Directors and some initiatives of the Executive. The rest, led by Carlos López and Julio López, has chosen to align with the opposition and maintain negotiations with other blocks.
Will, opportunity and solidarity (you)
The VOS block went from having four to three deputies after the expulsion of Karina Paz, due to internal conflicts generated by her election as the first secretary of the Board of Directors. After his expulsion, he resigned from that position.
Us
The bloc began the tenth legislature with three deputies, but after the expulsion of Vivian Preciado and Rudy Pereira – apparently for not being formally affiliated with the party – only Nadia de León Torres, daughter of Sandra Torres, remains as a representative.
A persistent but more visible phenomenon
“The divisions of political parties have always existed, but they were considered internal problems,” says the constitutionalist and former president of Congress, Roberto Alejos. He also explains that it was previously the responsibility of the National Executive Committee to maintain partisan unity, and who did not agree with the party line, was leaving a high political cost.
“Today the matches are so weak that that cost is not paid,” concludes Alejos. In addition, he points out that the creation of the Block Chiefs greatly weakened the role of the Executive Committees, which is reflected in the growing division within the Legislative.
