The apparent misuse of public funds stands out in the annual report of the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC). Document that was sent this Friday, May 23, 2025 to the Congress authorities.
The document exposes how, apparently, an amount of Q2 thousand 814 million 375 thousand 761 of the National Budget of 2024 was not executed in the correct way that left a series of shares to the authorities involved.
This report is delivered annually to the authorities of the Legislative Agency based on the Organic Law of the CGC, which stipulates the delivery of its analysis at least 150 days after the closing of the previous fiscal year.
To evaluate the good use of public resources, the Comptroller developed 1,446 audit audits; 146 probity audits; to make a total of 1,592 audits.
To evaluate in detail for the control processes, 3,528 appointments of verification presence were carried out, that is, personnel designated to evaluate some of the government institutions under suspicions.
The audits carried out bring together an amount of Q2 thousand 814 million 375 thousand 761 of last year’s budget, which left:
- 115 complaints on control
- 38 complaints on probity issues
- 20 complaints for falsification of titles
In total there are 173 complaints that become the task of the Public Ministry (MP) for the investigation process.
Some cases
Although the investigation period covers 2024, that is, the first year of the administration of Bernardo Arévalo, of the five entities with the greatest number of complaints three are related to the current administration and still two to the former former president, Alejandro Giammattei.
The complaints involved in the current Government Administration appears the Investment Trust for Housing (IVF), the Guatemalan Institute for Migration and the Ministry of Agriculture Livestock and Food (MAGA).
When talking about the complaints that still have possible links with the previous administration, the Superior Directorate of the Ministry of Communications stands out, an entity that contains two complaints.
There are also some cases that relate to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) and one linked to case B410, but because they are prosecuted, there are no more details because they are under reserve.
