According to Claudia Palencia, Vice Minister Anti -Narcotics of the Ministry of the Interior, they have initiated an investigation by the 1,190 kilos of cocaine found in Spain, which were hidden in containers with recycled cardboard from Guatemala.
Members of the customs surveillance of the Tax Agency of Spain said that the drug was hidden in 14 containers and commented that it has been the greatest seizure of cocaine in Madrid during the last two decades.
Palencia commented that there is coordination with Spain authorities and an inter -institutional work with the Public Ministry to determine if the drug left Guatemala or was contaminated in another port before arriving in Spain.
“We are doing the respective investigations in coordination with all institutions and, at the time of the result, it will be informed in accordance with how we are advancing,” said Palencia.
The Vice Minister said that the investigations will reach employees from ports and airports to determine whether they are involved in criminal acts, such as drug transfer.
“The call is to public officials who work in ports and airports; investigations will be done to determine responsibilities, if there are. We are working to have better controls in these areas,” he said.
According to the portal of the Superintendence of Tax Administration (SAT), the Personal Personal of the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Civil Police, the SAT and private and port companies work.
Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla and a second cargo
The investigators of the case indicated that the 14 containers with recycled cardboard arriving in Spain were in Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla, but did not specify the date.
The thousand 190 kilos of cocaine were hidden among the waste, and for that fact five people are being investigated, the Spanish authorities said.
They argued that the company that matters the cardboard operates from Mexico and Guatemala and sells recycling to companies in Spain.
In a month, this is the second shipment with drugs found in containers from Guatemala.
On May 1, the Dominican Republic authorities said that they seized three thousand four packages of alleged marijuana that were hidden in a container that transported sand for cats and left Guatemala.
They detailed that the drug was allegedly embarked in Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla. The investigations are backed with customs documents, whose copy has been delivered to the Guatemala authorities.
More controls in the ports
The anti -narcotics vice minister said that, to increase the controls in the ports, they will sign agreements and begin by Puerto Quetzal in the coming weeks.
“Signatures of agreements are coming in which we are going to formalize actions that were being carried out, but that it is necessary to establish them in a document; so all these agreements to be signed this year are coming,” he acknowledged.
In addition, he explained that coordination with United States agencies continues on drug trafficking.

During a summons in the Communications Commission of the Congress, Deputy Sandra Jovel said she would denounce the president of the Board of Directors of Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla, José Adalberto de la Peña, for not appearing three times.
Deputy Héctor Aldana criticized the absence of De la Peña in the face of the importance of accountability on the execution of port operations.
