The Guatemalans Steven Ovaldino Lorenzana Alvarenga and Allan Mendoza, accused of integrating the clan of drug traffickers “Lorenzana”, which for decades has collaborated with South American and Mexican cartels, appeared on Wednesday before a Federal Court of the United States, after being extradited, said the Department of Justice of that country (DOJ, in English).
Lorenzana Alvarenga, also known as Chipi, and Mendoza, alias carnitas, are accused of conspiring to import cocaine to the United States from Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
According to judicial documents, from 2006 to 2023 the two Guatemalans were key members of the “Lorenzana” drug trafficking organization, which transports tons of cocaine from South America to the United States on behalf of various Mexican, Honduran and Venezuelan cartels.
The criminal organization, based in Guatemala, allegedly controls several departments of the country and regularly use violence, including murders, aggressions, kidnappings and torture, to boost their drug trafficking activities, according to US justice.
The Doj accusation argues that Lorenzana Alvarenga and Mendoza were part of a “loyal complicit group” that surrounded the band leader, Haroldo Waldemar Lorenzana Terraza, who assumed the reins of the organization two decades ago, after the extradition and condemnation of several relatives, including their grandfather, Waldemar Lorenzana Lima, sentenced to 23 years in states in states Joined.
Lorenzana Alvarenga and Mendoza were extradited this Tuesday in an operation that represents another significant step in the ESC’s efforts to dismantle the organization.
If they are found guilty, both Guatemalans face a maximum perpetual chain penalty for the crime of conspiracy and up to 30 years in prison for charges related to firearms.
