The archbishopric announced that the Corpus Christi procession, scheduled for Thursday, June 19, was suspended. Instead, a special activity will be held in the Metropolitan Cathedral, which all the Catholics faithful can attend.
The Metropolitan Archbishop, Monsignor Gonzalo de Villa, reported on social networks that, unlike previous years, the traditional procession will not be carried out due to circumstances outside the will of the Church.
However, from Villa extended an invitation to all the faithful to participate in the celebration that will take place in the Metropolitan Cathedral during Corpus Thursday, with the purpose of maintaining the tradition.
Additionally, as usual, this important religious holiday will also be commemorated on Sunday.
The Corpus Christi, one of the most significant celebrations of the Catholic liturgical calendar, will be observed according to the established traditions, although with the remarkable exception of the absence of the procession that usually travels through the streets of the city.
Despite this modification in the usual format, the essence of the celebration within the Cathedral enclosure will be maintained.
De Villa added that the Corpus will be exposed to the street from the cathedral.
The precise reasons that motivated this decision were not specified; It was only indicated that they obey “causes outside our will.”
This holiday, which commemorates the institution of the Eucharist, traditionally includes a solemn procession in which the host consecrated in a custody is exhibited, being one of the most anticipated moments by the Catholic community.
Despite the change in the format, a significant assistance of faithful is expected both on Thursday and Sunday, days in which this important solemnity will be held.
