The Public Ministry (MP) determined that Evelyn Yesenia Juárez Pérez I was not pregnant At the time of denouncing the alleged disappearance of a newborn at the Hospital of the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) in Escuintla, on August 28.
The MP ruled out the existence, disappearance or subtraction of a baby in that healthcare center, and currently evaluates criminally acting against women for the crime of punishable simulation.
After the findings, the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) reported that the expert in charge of the case requested several complementary exams for Juarez.
The INACIF indicated that a medical examination was performed, but the woman did not have a psychological evaluation.
“The expert requested that several complementary exams be practiced, including the psychological one, but the patient did not perform them,” he explained.
What happened in the IGSS of Escuintla?
Preliminary investigations indicate that Juarez entered the hospital on the night of August 27 in apparent state of gestation, but left hours later with different clothing and without physical evidence of pregnancy. The hospital’s income and expenses book does not register its passage through the maternity area.
A medical-formal evaluation of INACIF confirmed that the woman did not present clinical signs of recent pregnancy and that the pregnancy test was negative.
In addition, the MP compiled testimonial statements and performs a psychological evaluation to determine its mental state. The Prosecutor’s Office continues with the proceedings to establish whether there is criminal responsibility for the false complaint.
In the afternoon, while the investigations advanced, medical authorities confirmed that Juárez Pérez was diagnosed with pregnancy at the IGSS Hospital in Puerto de San José; However, its continuity could not be verified by ultrasound in Escuintla, where it was referred, because it did not attend its scheduled appointments.
During a summons in the Congress of the Republic, the director of the IGSS Hospital of Escuintla, Franco Marcenaro Rubio, presented the chronology of the events recorded by the security cameras and explained that, although the file indicated that the woman had 24 weeks pregnant as of May 29, the hospital could not clinically confirm the evolution of gestation.
“We attended it in May and June; exams and ultrasound were requested, but never made them. It did not reach the scheduled dates, so we failed to make an ultrasonographic identification of pregnancy,” said Marcenaro Rubio. He added that the patient had a history of two caesarean sections and had requested an operation to avoid future pregnancies.
IGSS posture
For its part, the IGSS reported in a statement that, according to the evaluation of INACIF, the patient who denounced the alleged subtraction of her son at the IGSS departmental hospital in Escuintla was not in a state of gestation at the time of her admission.
The institution said that, since the complaint was known, it provided support to the affiliate and the authorities responsible for the investigation, and made available all the necessary resources for its development.
Likewise, he thanked the intervention of the Public Ministry, the Attorney General’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, the INACIF and the National Civil Police, and expressed its confidence that the corresponding responsibilities will be deduced in accordance with the law.
