The medical clinic of the maximum security prison Renewal 1 was adapted for the leaders of Barrio 18. According to Ludin Astolfo Godinezgeneral director of the Penitentiary System (SP), the fans found during the search on Wednesday, October 8, were already installed.
“The fans that were found there were already installed, because where the Wolf now lives—Aldo Dupié Ochoa Mejía, leader of Barrio 18—was part of the Renovación 1 medical clinic,” the official explained during a meeting with deputy José Chic.
A video shows how the inmates in that prison, where the authorities of the Ministry of the Interior indicated that No prisoner could bring in personal items.they wear new tennis shoes and other clothing other than the orange uniform that was given to them when they entered.
“In relation to the tennis shoes and those clothes that they have, it is the clothes that they arrived with the day they were transferred from Fraijanes 2. They did not have an orange uniform because, as they indicated, they had it dirty,” explained the director.
During the search on Wednesday, October 8, Ochoa was wearing white tennis shoes and a blue cap, but when he was transferred he was wearing black tennis shoes and was not wearing a cap.
The official said the director of Renewal Center 1 has been instructed to provide uniforms to the inmates as they are available. The Government portfolio paid Q88 thousand for 250 suits for those deprived of liberty.
The congressman questioned the director of the SP about the underwear and feminine hygiene items found in the maximum security prison.
“Are there women imprisoned? Then why are there underwear and sanitary pads?” Chic asked.
Godínez commented that there are no women staying overnight in Renovación 1 and that there is a 24-hour surveillance system.
“No, there are no women, because I imagine that some of the visitors they have on their visiting day – which is only one day a week – could have left them. But no visitors spend the night within Renovation 1. It is totally prohibited; it is against the protocols,” the director responded.
During the investigation, the prisoners indicated that they had negotiated to have comforts inside the prison.
“We have authorization to have this here. If it is in here, it was because they authorized it; we already paid for it,” said Ochoa Mejía during the search.
Likewise, Jorge Yahir de León Hernández, alias The Diabolicalcame out with a hat and a towel at the time of the search.
“We are already negotiating to be well; we have authorization,” said the leader of the MS.
SP says they did not negotiate with the prisoners
During the summons, the official commented that they have not negotiated with the inmates. “Well, I don’t know who he negotiated with, but with the General Directorate of the Penitentiary System and the authorities of the Ministry of the Interior there has not been a single negotiation,” he added.
Godínez indicated that there is a protocol to prevent the entry of illicit objects into the prison. In addition, he recognized that each inmate has the right to one hour of calls.
“That—the calls—is paid for by them, because they buy their cards. The company only gave us the service of installing the card-carrying phones,” said the director.
The official told the congressman that only the members of Barrio 18 and the Mara Salvatrucha were not wearing a uniform on the day of the search, but a video shows that, in other sectors, it was not being used either.
“There are few prisoners who were wearing uniforms,” said an investigator who was at the investigation.
“This is like when you see the stories from Colombia, where drug traffickers ordered the prison where they wanted to be built with their own resources. That seems to be what is becoming here in the country, that is, it has become Guatemala, each person decides where they want to be and what comforts they want to have,” said the deputy.
