The majority of the members of the Higher University Council (CSU) approved this Friday, April 17, the re-election of Walter Mazariegos as rector of the University of San Carlos (Usac) for the period 2026-2030.
According to information from Guatemala Visible, Mazariegos’ inauguration is scheduled for next July 1.
The vote to approve the re-election was as follows: 22 votes in favor, nine against and two abstentions. 33 counselors participated.
Prior to approving the re-election, the Legal Affairs Directorate of the USAC ruled to reject in limine an appeal for review presented by agronomist Gesly Aníbal Bonilla Landaverry against the re-election of Walter Mazariegos.
He argued that the regulations do not establish the figure of the appeal for review.
It also ruled to reject an appeal for annulment presented by deputy José Chic against Mazariegos’ re-election.
These decisions were made by the CSU in an ordinary session this Friday, when it also confirmed that 73 voters participated and omitted to refer to the absence of 97 to complete the University Electoral Body of 170 representatives required by law, noted Guatemala Visible.
Walter Mazariegos was re-elected rector in a tense day on April 8 in Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, where there were demonstrations over alleged fraud.
The demonstrations have also spread to the central campus, in zone 12 of the capital, and to university centers in other cities.
On Monday, April 13, at the press conference known as La Ronda, President Bernardo Arévalo referred to the USAC case and indicated that it is still a pending matter.
According to the president, it is important that the renewal of the justice system responds to the appeals and protections presented regarding the election of the rector.
