The president donald trump has nominated Erica Schwartz, a veteran military doctor, as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Through a publication on the Truth Social network, Trump announced that Schwartz will be his candidate for run the CDC. In addition, she highlighted her “time as a doctor in the armed forces and her time as deputy director general of Public Health” during her first term as president.
For Schwartz to be director of the CDC, must be confirmed by the United States Senate in a vote.
If she succeeds, she will become the fourth head of the CDC since Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
Schwartz served for 24 years in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Officer Corps and has a bachelor’s degree. doctor from Brown University and a lawyer from the University of Maryland.
The CDC had been without a director confirmed by the Senate for months, after the previous director, Susan Monarez, was dismissed in August 2025 for not sharing the same line of action in the Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy’s vaccination policy.
Under Kennedy’s leadership, the CDC has undergone sweeping changes, including massive layoffs and a restructuring that, according to him, it helped reduce “bureaucratic expansion.”
Kennedy has also introduced a number of controversial changes to US vaccination policy, such as reduce access to vaccines in the childhood vaccination schedule, which has alarmed scientists.
