The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) canceled the environmental license for the University of San Carlos viaduct project (Usac), after determining that it was granted under a category of environmental impact lower than that which corresponds, according to current regulations.
The decision was announced this Monday, April 20, by the MARN and the Ministry of Culture and Sports (Micude), who reported that the project called “University Campus Extension Viaduct of the Periférico Universitario Acceso Norte, Universidad de San Carlos, zona 12, Guatemala, Guatemala” did not meet the appropriate classification.
In this case, the MARN filed the corresponding complaint with the Public Ministry, according to the statement.
In addition, the authorities indicated that the project “Extension University Campus Torre de Parqueos, Universidad de San Carlos, zone 12, Guatemala, Guatemala” lacks an environmental license.
As a consequence, Micude notified the termination of the Archaeological Research and Rescue Agreement 04-2026, linked to both projects, because they do not comply with the legal requirements for their execution.
