Government of Mexico reports on CIA agents who died in Chihuahua and says they did not have authorization to operate in the country

The Security Cabinet reported this Saturday that the two CIA agents who died in a road accident in Chihuahua did not have permission to participate in operations in Mexico.

In a press release, the Mexican Government indicated that it was unaware of the operational presence of foreign agents in the country.

“The institutions that make up the Security Cabinet… were not aware that foreign agents were operating, or were going to physically participate, in any operational action within the national territory,” the letter details.

He explained that the agents entered Mexico as visitors, without permission to carry out paid activities or with diplomatic passports. “None had formal accreditation to participate in operational activities in national territory.”

“The Security Cabinet expresses its deepest regret for the death of four people—two state officials and two US agents—during the accident that occurred in Chihuahua on April 19,” indicated the Government of Mexico.

In that sense, the authorities reiterated the current legal framework: “Mexican legislation is clear: it does not allow the participation of foreign agents in operations within the national territory.”

In addition, they pointed out that institutional coordination is maintained to carry out the reviews in coordination with the competent local authorities and with the United States Embassy in Mexico.

The Mexican Government also highlighted the principles of international cooperation: “International cooperation in security matters is developed through information exchange mechanisms, institutional coordination and technical collaboration, always with absolute respect for national sovereignty.”

“The Government of Mexico reiterates its willingness to maintain a close, serious and respectful relationship with the Government of the United States, for the benefit of the security of both countries,” he indicated.
