Mictlán could not avoid relegation on the last day of the 2026 Clausura Tournament. Los Conejos tied 1-1 against Aurora at the Guillermo Slowing Stadium in Amatitlán, a result that in other circumstances could have been enough, but this time it was not enough because Guastatoya and Malacateco won their respective matches and added the three points that definitively moved them away from the danger zone, leaving Mictlán in eleventh position in the accumulated table with 51 points.
The match started with Mictlán taking the initiative from the opening whistle, aware of the urgency of the result. However, in the 11th minute Aurora opened the scoring with a goal from Eddie Ibargüen after a cross from Klisman García that surprised the visiting defense.
The Rabbits responded with intensity, hitting the post with a shot from William Fajardo in the 27th minute and with several approaches that Liborio Sánchez resolved with authority under the three Aurinegro posts.
In the second half, Mictlán came out with everything and in the 71st minute found the tie through Pablo Meza with a free kick that escaped the Aurora goalkeeper’s hands to make it 1-1. The joy was short-lived since at that moment the results of Guastatoya and Malacateco already sealed the fate of the Rabbits. Despite playing with ten men after the expulsion of Renny Folleco in the 64th minute, Mictlán continued looking for the second goal that never came.
A promotion that lasted only one season
Mictlán’s relegation has an especially bitter taste because the Conejos had been promoted from the First Division at the beginning of this season. His time in the National League was limited to Apertura 2025 and Clausura 2026, in what was a brief but intense experience in the highest category of Guatemalan soccer. The team returns to the lower category just a year after achieving promotion.
Mictlán thus accompanies Achuapa as the two teams that will lose the category at the close of Clausura 2026. Los Cebolleros had confirmed their relegation in advance several days before, while Los Conejos maintained hope until the last minute of the last day before the results of their direct rivals sealed their fate in the accumulated table.
With 51 points on the accumulated table, Mictlán closes a season that began with the excitement of being newly promoted and ends with the pain of immediate relegation. Guastatoya and Malacateco, who also reached the last day with 50 points each, knew how to take advantage of their games to get away from the danger zone and confirm their permanence in the National League for next season
