An alert released this Tuesday, April 28, warned of a computer attack against the systems of the National Registry of Persons (Renap).
According to the alert, the hacker would have accessed identity data of the population. Among the violated records are alleged data from birth, marriage and death certificates.

Renap stated that, as part of its permanent security protocols, it maintains constant monitoring, and to date no attack has been detected that compromises the information of Guatemalans.
“There are no critical alerts that indicate an impact on the institutional technological infrastructure, nor have any evidence of mass consumption or anomalous behavior in the services been identified,” according to Renap.
The institution stated that its systems have multiple security rings, which are permanently monitored and guarantee data protection.
He reiterated that his systems operate normally and called on the population to inform themselves only through official channels.

New biometric system
In July 2025, the Renap Board of Directors, then chaired by Blanca Alfaro, judge of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE); Felipe Sánchez, Vice Minister of the Interior, and Edgar Rodríguez, representing the Congress of the Republic, approved the acquisition of a new biometric system with different characteristics than the one used in recent years.
