The most recent figures reflect a slight decrease in the homicidal violenceaccording to the Crime Reporting Index (IDD) presented by the Center for National Economic Research (CIEN).

In March 2026, the year-on-year rate stood at 16.3 homicides per 100 thousand inhabitantsmaintaining the downward trend from its highest level recorded in July 2025, when it reached 17.7. Since then, the indicator has gradually decreased.

Despite the reduction, the impact remains significant in certain groups. He 59.4% of homicide victims in March corresponded to people between 18 and 35 yearswhich shows the high vulnerability of the young population.

Extortion crime remains concentrated

In contrast, extortion continues with a high incidence.

Only in March were complaints 1 thousand 436 casesalthough the interannual rate also showed a decrease, going from 147.14 in March 2025 129.48 complaints per 100 thousand inhabitants in March 2026.

The phenomenon, however, remains focused. During the first quarter of the year, 44% of extortion complaints were concentrated in just 10 municipalitiesand only the municipality of Guatemala accumulated 22% of the cases.

The data, systematized by the CIEN based on official records, show a slight improvement in homicides, but also highlight the persistence of crimes such as extortion, which continue to directly affect the population.
