President Bernardo Arévalo interviewed privately this Wednesday, May 29, the candidates for Attorney General Carlos Alberto García Alvarado and César Augusto Ávila Aparicio, as part of the final process to select the new head of the Public Ministry (MP), who must take office on May 17, replacing Consuelo Porras.

García Alvarado described his participation in the meeting with the president as “historic.” During the meeting, he presented his work plan, focused on modernizing criminal action and adapting the institution to current challenges, such as transnational and digital crimes.

The candidate highlighted his career within the Public Ministry and assured that he is a “career prosecutor” with no sanctions or accusations against him. In addition, he proposed strengthening inter-institutional coordination with entities such as the National Civil Police, without affecting the constitutional autonomy of the MP.

He also stressed the need to update research methods, considering that these must evolve with respect to those used since the creation of the institution in 1994.

For his part, Ávila Aparicio indicated that his interview with the president took place in an “objective, real and concrete” environment. He noted that the questions were direct, which allowed him to respond confidently during the evaluation process.

Although he avoided detailing the issues addressed, he stated that these will be made known as the process progresses. Likewise, he confirmed that the Minister of the Interior, Marco Antonio Villeda, participated in the meeting.

Ávila Aparicio considered that this type of dynamics strengthens coordination between State institutions and contributes to improving the functioning of the justice system.

The interview day began last Tuesday with the participation of the lawyer Gabriel Estuardo García Luna and Beyla Adaly Estrada Barrientos, and will conclude on Thursday with Julio César Rivera Clavería and Néctor Wilebaldo de León Ramírez.
