Colombian authorities have reported that the “El Niño” phenomenon could arrive in the country much sooner than expectedwith conditions rated from “strong” to “very strong”, for which they have warned to the population about the need to take immediate measures in the face of possible impacts.
According to statements by the Colombian Minister of the Environment, Irene Vélez, there is an 82% probability that “El Niño” impact in Colombia between May, June and July.
“That probability changed yesterday and that is why the alarm is that could be anticipated,” the official said at a press conference.
The “El Niño” phenomenon is characterized by unusual warming of the surface waters of the Pacific Ocean.
This not only produces intense droughts, but it alters weather patterns on a global scale.
On the other hand, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also warned that “El Niño” would arrive much earlier than expected, so its impacts on a global scale will be felt in different regions.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on May 14 that “El Niño” could reach its maximum intensity at the end of 2026.
Specifically, “El Niño” is expected to cause greater rainfall in the south, which would cause flooding and a rainfall deficit in both Central America and North America.
