Meaning of Pentecost
The presence of the Holy Spirit among men means the fulfillment of the promise made by the Lord at the end of his earthly life: he would send his Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity (Matthew 28, 20), adds ACI Prensa.
In the homily of 2025, Pope Leo XIV said, when referring to the Gospel reading of that day (Acts 2, 1-11):
“…in Jerusalem, at that time, there was a multitude of the most varied origins, and yet, “each one heard them speaking in their own language” (v. 6). And so, it is thus that at Pentecost the doors of the cenacle open because the Spirit opens the borders. As Benedict XVI states [Homilía de 2005]: “The Holy Spirit gives the gift of understanding. It overcomes the rupture that began in Babel – the confusion of hearts, which pits us against each other – and opens the borders.”
“Celebrating Pentecost is opening the doors. It is letting oneself be led by the Spirit to emerge from confinement, fear and indifference,” says Father Héctor López Alvarado, auxiliary bishop of Guadalajara, in a note from Vatican Newsand invites us to heal divisions, overcome fear with the courage of faith, overcome individualism with charity and go out to meet those who suffer with mercy.
