Municipality of the capital identifies vulnerable areas due to possible rains associated with Cristina and reports on prevention actions

The Emergency Operations Committee and the Vulnerabilities and Emergency Management Directorate (AVE) of the Municipality of Guatemala presented the impact projection and how they are preparing to address possible emergencies caused by the now tropical depression Cristina.

In the information provided this Wednesday, June 10, it was stated that both entities are coordinated with different institutions, and that each one has its function and care protocol in the event of any emergency.

Zones 15, 16, 24 and 25 are those that could be most affected by the rains. Normal in June is 37 millimeters of precipitation, but now between 40 mm and 42 mm could be recorded.

However, in zone 21, 60 mm of precipitation is expected, making it more vulnerable to impacts for neighbors.

Falling trees and flooding caused by clandestine garbage dumps are the main risks in different areas of the capital, said Héctor Flores, from the AVE.

Mayor Ricardo Quiñónez highlighted that they promote preventive measures, such as cleaning sewers.

Flores added that, so far this rainy season and due to the different risks, a court has issued “no less than 500” notifications to neighbors for risk situations in their localities.

This June 10, Insivumeh updated the information and highlighted that tropical storm Cristina reduced its intensity to a tropical depression and is located about 275 kilometers from Jutiapa. Its movement is stationary.

He added that the possible trajectory of the depression is directed towards El Salvador, which would favor its weakening upon landfall.

In Guatemala it would affect as a strong low pressure system, so rains between Wednesday and Friday are expected to be abundant, especially in the valleys of the Oriente, the Bocacosta, the Pacific, the Central Altiplano and the West.

In the other regions, rains could be recorded accompanied by local electrical activity.
