As part of the cooperation that the United States provides to Guatemala in matters of security and in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime structures, the chargé d’affaires of the embassy of that country, Jorgan Andrews, visited the Puerto Quetzal facilities, where K9 units were recently implemented to detect illegal acts.
Andrews’ visit to the port facilities was aimed at verify and know the work of the K9 units, implemented by the United States in conjunction with the Ministry of the Interior to prevent the entry of narcotics and merchandise of illicit origin.
The United States Embassy in Guatemala broadcast a video on its X account in which Andrews is seen taking a tour of the port facilities, verifying the K9 units and talking with port authorities.
“I am here in Puerto Quetzal to see an exchange of good port security practices that facilitate trade,” says the American delegate.
The K9 units in Puerto Quetzal were implemented in May, following the same model as It was implemented in February in Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla.
According to data from the United States Embassy, the implementation of these K9 units to reinforce port security in Guatemala has the support of the Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL)in coordination with the Task Force for Trade Facilitation (FTFC), made up of the Superintendence of Tax Administration (SAT) and the ministries of the Interior, Defense and Agriculture, Livestock and Food.
