PNC warns of possible attack against traffic agents in the capital and Mixco

The agents of the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) of Guatemala City and Mixco, respectively, received a notification from the National Civil Police (PNC), warning about possible attacks against members of these municipal institutions by members of neighborhood 18.

According to a letter sent to the heads of stations, substations and reserve core of the PNC, It is reported that “members of Barrio 18 intend to carry out an armed attack against elements of the Municipal Transit Police of the Municipality of Mixco and Department of Guatemala,” the communication indicates.

It is also warned that These possible attacks “could be committed by gang members in two- and four-wheeled vehicles”so the authorities of said municipal institutions have already been notified so that they can take the pertinent security measures.

Likewise, it is indicated that the PNC will implement patrols and mobile operations, as well as actions to provide security and the identification of people with “the appearance of gang members who ride on motorcycles in order to avoid negative events.”

On alert

The spokesperson for the Municipal Traffic Police of Guatemala, Amílcar Montejo, confirmed that this Saturday, June 13, the operational director of the MT Police, Hugo Godoy, was notified of the situation.

“The Operational Directorate of the MT Police has issued instructions on internal security issues. The operational director of the MT Police, officer Hugo Godoy, was notified today.”

Montejo assured that the institution’s staff has already been informed and is on alert in the event of any situation.

“We are on alert for various scheduled activities and events, providing help and support, but with greater attention to all processes. Our work is service, none of the agents have a weapon, our objective is mobility and road order,” said Montejo.

The spokesperson also commented that since last Thursday and Friday a greater number of PNC elements have been noticed who carry out patrols in the vicinity and in places where municipal agents transit services carry out their traffic service and regulation activities in the capital.

“The National Civil Police has been observed maintaining greater patrols in our sector. Yes, since yesterday there has been a greater police presence from markets, bus stops and on main roads, especially at traffic lights. Within our controls, since Thursday morning we have observed a greater police presence at traffic lights, markets, bus stops, main roads, areas such as the airport, El Trébol, especially zones 1, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17 and 18,” said Montejo.

They take action

For his part, the mayor of the Municipality of Mixco, Neto Bran, spoke out on social networks about the situation.

“They have us threatened!! But I am going to put armed pairs with PMT and PM and I am going to coordinate all my registered weapons to defend ourselves from these criminals. This is in retaliation for the mess we caught with my municipal police a few days ago, they are angry because we do act!”, published the mayor.

He later shared another post in which Mixco PMT agents are observed accompanied by elements of the Municipal Police, as a preventive measure against any threat.

He pointed out that he has all the municipal police armed and with enough ammunition.
