Caleb Yirenkyi became Ghana’s hero by scoring the goal in the 1-0 victory against Panama in the 90+5 minute of their debut at the 2026 World Cup. The 20-year-old midfielder pushed in a low cross from Brandon Thomas-Asante and secured the three points for the Black Stars at BMO Field.

Yirenkyi was born on January 15, 2006 in Bechem, Ghana. He is 1.82 meters tall and plays mainly as a midfielder. He is a product of the Right to Dream Academy, which he joined in 2017, when he was 11 years old. In February 2025 he made his debut with the first team of FC Nordsjælland, of the Danish Super League, where he signed a contract until June 2030. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is 10 million euros, although the Danish club is asking for close to 30 million for his signing.

In the 2025/26 season with Nordsjælland he has played more than 30 official matches, in which he recorded two goals and six assists. His combination of physical ability, ball recovery and offensive projection has made him one of the most promising midfielders of his generation.

The goal against Panama was the second he scored with the Ghanaian senior team. He had already scored one in a friendly match against Wales in June. With only 12 international caps before the World Cup, Yirenkyi has already made his mark in his first World Cup match.

Interest from Real Madrid

Since the beginning of June 2026, Real Madrid has shown interest in the player. According to reports, the Spanish club, under the technical direction of José Mourinho, contacted Michael Essien to obtain detailed references on Yirenkyi. His name also appears on the lists of other European clubs, such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Yirenkyi represents the new generation of Ghanaian talent trained at the Right to Dream Academy, the same one that produced footballers such as Mohammed Kudus and Kamaldeen Sulemana. His tactical maturity and ability to appear in decisive moments position him as a complete midfielder with great projection.

With this goal in Toronto, Caleb Yirenkyi not only gave Ghana three important points in Group L, which also includes England and Croatia, but also took an important step in his career. At 20 years old, the Ghanaian midfielder is already closely followed by several of Europe’s main clubs and has earned a place among the figures on the first day of the 2026 World Cup.

His story is just beginning, but the shot in added time against Panama is already part of the tournament’s highlights.
