Landing strips, roads and other illegal structures are eliminated in the Maya Biosphere Reserve

The National Council of Protected Areas (Conap) reported this Thursday, June 18, that, in the exercise of the powers conferred on it by national legislation and in compliance with the resolutions issued by competent jurisdictional bodies, it carried out actions ordered by a judge within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, in Petén.

He explained that the actions are aimed at the dismantling of illegal infrastructure, including roads, landing strips, gates and fences.

The proceedings were carried out in coordination with the Departmental Government of Petén, the National Civil Police and the Ministry of National Defense.

He stated that the actions also responded to cases of encroachment within this and other protected areas of Petén.

Conap also reported that it promotes the prevention and combat of other illicit activities that represent a threat to the natural and cultural heritage of the Nation.

He stressed that the proceedings have provoked an adverse reaction from the people who illegally established the dismantled infrastructure; Furthermore, according to Conap, they have used social networks “to make a series of threats towards the institutions of Conap, its personnel and its infrastructure.”

In this sense, it indicated that, as a State institution, it reiterates its commitment to legality and makes public knowledge that, in the event of any illegal act that threatens the integrity of its personnel, biological diversity, protected areas, the assets under its protection and its facilities, it will continue to exercise the corresponding administrative and judicial actions, within the framework of its powers and in coordination with the competent authorities.

He stressed that the purpose is to guarantee the conservation and protection of the invaluable natural and cultural heritage of the Nation, for the benefit of present and future generations.
