Cinthia Monterroso and six other prosecutors linked to the administration of Consuelo Porras are dismissed

The attorney general and head of the Public Ministry (MP), Gabriel García Luna, dismissed seven officials who held positions during the Consuelo Porras administration. In addition, a resignation was confirmed, according to sources from the Prosecutor’s Office consulted this Friday, June 19.

Among the dismissals, that of Cinthia Edelmira Monterroso Gómez, who served as regional prosecutor, stands out. During Porras’ administration, Monterroso was in charge of investigations related to cases that generated controversy and for which she was sanctioned by the United States under accusations of undermining democracy and corruption.

Monterroso gained public relevance when he directed proceedings related to the capture of journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, president of elPeriódicowho was accused of money laundering. This process generated national and international criticism because it was considered an action against freedom of the press.

He also participated in investigations against Zamora Marroquín’s lawyers and against anti-corruption prosecutors who were part of the defunct International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG).

Likewise, he requested that journalists and columnists of elPeriódico.

Monterroso was also in charge of operations linked to the judicial process against the Semilla Movement, party of President Bernardo Arévalo. The president accused her of participating in an alleged “coup d’état”, in “conspiracy” with Judge Fredy Orellana, Attorney General Consuelo Porras and the former head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (Feci), Rafael Curruchiche. All of them, like Monterroso, have been sanctioned by the United States.

The officials separated from their positions are:

  • Cinthia Edelmira Monterroso Gómez, regional prosecutor.
  • Noé Nehemías Rivera Vásquez, section prosecutor of the Human Rights Prosecutor’s Office.
  • Marilyn Solange Castillo Castillo, section prosecutor of the Administrative Crimes Prosecutor’s Office.
  • Carlos Roberto Tohom Escobar, deputy director of Operational Criminal Investigation of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (Dicri).
  • Rocksy Gabriela Arriola López, tax agent of the Special Investigation Methods Unit.
  • Lucía del Carmen Muñoz Herrera de Pérez, executive assistant 2 of the Special Investigation Methods Unit.
  • Estuardo Arnoldo Zea Florián, deputy coordinator of Systems and Communications of the Special Investigation Methods Unit.

In addition, Óscar Sagastume Álvarez, director of Criminal Investigations, presented his resignation, according to the sources consulted.
