Armed attack near La Placita leaves two dead; Mob beats alleged aggressor

Two men died from gunshot wounds and a third was transferred in critical condition to a health center after being attacked by a mob, following an armed attack that occurred this Sunday on Sixth Avenue and 18th Street in Zone 1 of the capital.

The incident occurred in one of the busiest areas of the Historic Center, surrounded by businesses and a few meters from the Guatemala Municipality building.

The attack occurred in a commercial corridor near clothing sales and in front of a jewelry store, as well as a few meters from the El Calvario Transmetro station.

The Municipal Firefighters reported that they were alerted by an armed attack and upon arriving at the scene, they evaluated two men who had injuries caused by firearm projectiles.

According to the rescuers’ report, the victims had “perforations from projectiles in the thoracic and abdominal region.”

According to versions collected at the scene, the two men were walking through the sector when they were attacked by an individual who was apparently already waiting for them.

The shooting caused moments of panic among merchants and customers. People who were inside a nearby jewelry store suffered a nervous breakdown after hearing the explosions.

While the bodies remained on the public road and dozens of curious onlookers watched the scene, the paramedics also treated a man who had been attacked by a mob.

According to the report from the Municipal Firefighters, this person was attacked by neighbors and passers-by who pointed him out as the alleged perpetrator of the armed incident. The report adds that the patient was transferred “in a delicate condition due to the injuries suffered during the collective attack.”

The lifeguards also indicated that “none of those involved have been identified so far.”

A motorcycle was left at the scene which, according to the report, “possibly was where the aggressor was driving and traveling.”

Witnesses reported that the alleged attacker tried to flee on the motorcycle; However, the vehicle did not start and he had to run away.

According to these versions, several people caught up with him and subsequently attacked him, leaving him seriously injured.

Traffic on Sixth Avenue and 18th Street was restricted for several hours due to the authorities’ efforts.
