The president of the United States, Donald Trump, demanded this Sunday that Iran “immediately prevent its paid agents in Lebanon from causing problems” or US forces will resume attacks.
“If they don’t do it (prevent their agents from causing problems in Lebanon), we will attack Iran again with great force, just like last week, but even more!” wrote the president on his Truth Social network.
Trump’s message comes as negotiations between Iran and the United States are underway in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, to end the war in the Middle East and in which, according to US Vice President JD Vance, “great progress” has been made.
Vance, who heads the US delegation, said that, in addition to having made great progress in recent hours, he hoped to make “additional progress in the time scheduled for the talks.”
The vice president made these statements in an appearance before the press together with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, and his counterpart of Qatar, Mohamed bin Abdulrahman, who are acting as mediators.
Trump also stated this Sunday, in statements to a Fox journalist, that “the United States could take control of the strait in the future, if necessary” and that this would imply that “the United States would keep 20% of the oil that transits through said strait.”
According to this conversation, the president of the United States claims to keep various options open in the event that the peace negotiations do not bear fruit.
Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding that, since last Thursday, opens a 60-day truce period to reach a final agreement to end the war started by Israel and the United States on February 28.
