Walter Mazariegos confirmed on the morning of this Wednesday, July 1, that he took office as rector of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (Usac), for one more period, which will end in 2030.
Through a video broadcast on his social networks, Mazariegos thanked the university authorities and the electoral bodies that voted for him and supported him to renew his position.
The message emerged amid protests by Sancarlist groups outside the Usac campus, in zone 12, some legal actions pending resolution, including before the Constitutional Court (CC), and public accusations that Mazariegos’ election was fraudulent.
Mazariegos, on the other hand, in his message does not refer to the accusations but to his taking possession. According to him, in a meeting at 7:30 a.m. this Wednesday, July 1, he signed the act that revalidates him in the rectory and swore to defend the Constitution, he adds.
“We will begin the first session of July 2026 of the honorable CSU to appoint the USAC authorities at the national level. I am grateful for the unconditional support of all the Sancarlistas who trusted me and my work team to continue directing the glorious University of San Carlos of Guatemala,” he says in the video, which is accompanied by images of the central campus of that university.
He adds: “We will continue to innovate, modernize, modernize, decentralize and specialize USAC, respecting and defending its autonomy, philosophy and its organic law, long life for the University,” the video ends.
