“Eight musicians, a dream and a band that ended up becoming a generational anthem: the untold story of Wizard of Oz,” highlights part of the description of Eterno Pictures that announces the upcoming premiere of Pagan Festivalthe biographical film that delves into the history of the popular Spanish band Mägo de Oz.
The first preview of this biopic occurs in the midst of controversies with members of the group, who point out that they could take legal action after it was defined. Pagan Festival as the definitive title of the feature film.
The production addresses the formation of the Spanish folk metal band, founded by Txus di Fellatio in 1988, and how their career led them to achieve fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with songs such as Pagan Festival and windmillswhich gave him international recognition.
The film, directed by Álvaro Brechner, delves into part of the history of the band, which dared to mix heavy metal with traditional instruments, which led the audience to chant: “Stand up, raise your fist and come, to the pagan festival, there is something to drink at the bonfire.”
Under the production of Eterno Island Pictures and El Sueño Eterno Pictures, this project arrives with a first trailer that, as detailed The Hollywood Reportershows the group on stage, as well as the problems they faced after achieving success. The publication adds that the film has been mired in controversy since its announcement.
After the project was announced, Txus di Fellatio, founder and leader of the group, issued a statement in December 2024 in which he indicated that they had not authorized the use of the name Mägo de Oz, the identity of its members or their songs.
It is known that the film, which had Peri, the band’s former bassist, as part of the executive production, managed to reach an agreement with the group, whose members would provide advice during production. Even, some members and former members would participate with cameos, as detailed The Hollywood Reporter.
However, on June 16, a new statement caught the public’s attention. Carlos Prieto announced legal actions against the production company in charge of the Mägo de Oz film and pointed out that it committed wrongs by registering, without authorization and unilaterally, the name Pagan Festivalwhich belongs to the group.
The musician stressed that he completely disassociated himself from the production and stated that Mägo de Oz will take legal action for this fact. Despite this, the first trailer for the film was released, which, according to media such as Antena 3, is scheduled to be released in 2026.
According to the description of Eterno Pictures, this production “retraces the key moments of a career marked by creativity, internal tensions, triumphs and failures that built and defined its identity.”
